5 Top Tips From Your Dental Hygienist

We often hear people talk about going to the dentist, but it is less often that we hear people talk about the hygienist. Hygienists are important, because they are the ones who check out the situation, and get your teeth all sparkling and clean (sometimes even before the dental exam).

We have put together some top tips for keeping your smile bright and your teeth healthy:

  1. Replace your toothbrush. We can’t say this enough. Toothbrushes often build up excess bacteria and become ineffective. They should be replaced every 3 months or so. Older toothbrushes grow thousands of bacteria, and this is not something you want near your mouth!
  2. Floss! If flossing is something you don’t do because you hate it or aren’t good at it, speak to your hygienist. They might be able to recommend a different type of floss or an alternative cleaning device.
  3. Eating out all day but unable to use a toothbrush? Chew some sugar-free gum. Chewing gum stimulates saliva flow, which helps to keep your mouth fresh, and get rid of some excess debris that may be in your teeth.
  4. Speak to your hygienist. Some people accumulate tartar more quickly than others. If your hygienist has identified that you are one of these people, you are able to use an anti-tartar toothpaste or mouthwash, which can help with this problem.
